Exfoliation and Enzymes

Exfoliation through Proteases

Proteolytic enzymes, also know as porteinases, are the enzymes that have the ability to digest the bonds in proteins. They break them into peptides and then into their smaller components, amino acids. Topically applied proteinases are useful in a professional treatment setting as they can safely digest dead, impaced proteins while leaving the healthy, living tissue unaffected. For this reason, enzyme treatments are typically considered a more gentle option than a chemical exfoliation solution. By Lvana Velikovic, Ph.D
